I had a spare hour with the kids in bed and my sweet wife on a girls trip to see friends in Houston, so I took the opportunity to get out in the garage and take care of the rusty bolts preventing my convertible back end from laying in the correct spot.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Not much to do except cut the bolt head off with the washer and grind down the stump that was left.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I think the next project is to replace the drivers side torque box and front section of the rear frame rail. Once I start doing this I can really see if the rear frame rail hump section has miraculously survived or if my screwdriver method isn't as good as I thought.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
This last weekend I didn't get a lot of time to work on the car, but I got what looks like a lot of progress. I finished removing the back end of the coupe and was able to easily lift it off the back of the jig with help from my brother that lives down the road.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Putting the convertible rear portion on the jig was little more difficult. I'm pretty sure it was close to twice as heavy as the coupe back end.....who knew rust was so heavy?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
At this point, the convertible back end is about 3 inches too far aft since the front bolts of the rear leaf springs are still rusted to the rear torque box. The upright on the jig fits snugly up against the inside of the rear frame rails so with the bolt heads sticking out I couldn't get it in place. My next task is to cut those bolt heads off and slide the back end into place.</div>

I also removed the convertible top since it kept getting in the way while I was trying to poke around and find the rusty parts I need to clean up. It was pretty simple after removing the bolts holding the rear window and curtain. Whoever replaced this top the last time must have lost about half of the correct bolts. There 2 different sizes of large lag bolts holding things together. After that, it was just 6 bolts on the sides and the whole top came off in one piece.</div>

With it up on the jig, I had a lot more room to climb underneath and start doing my screw driver test. (see earlier <a href="http://tomsmustangeng.blogspot.com/2013/07/rusty-rear-frame-rails.html">post</a> on this method) You wouldn't know it from the pictures below, but the drivers side rear frame rail is slightly better than the coupe. I only need to remove the front and the rear part of the frame rails rather than the entire thing. The frame rail hump didn't spring any leaks when I poked at it with my screw driver.</div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">One of the previous owners frame rail repairs. I'm not the best welder, but from the looks of this car<br />I know I'm definitely not the worst.....by a long shot. Most of these welds remind me of<br />a pile of hocked up loogies.</td></tr>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
From the looks of things this car has been "restored" at least twice. The first time it got a nice coat of yellow over the original silver frost paint. The second time, I'm not sure if the owner even sanded it before slapping on the bondo over the riveted on galvanized quarter patches and painting it red. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It might be a little early to start thinking of the color, but my plan is to paint it Ford Laser Red with a set of Perl White GT stripes with the Deluxe Ivory interior. This isn't the original factory colors, but I just can't get that excited about the silver frost paint with black deluxe interior that it originally had. This won't be a contours level restoration so I might as well finish it the way I want. right? Any thoughts?</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I am a little curious about the chrome trim behind the '67 scoops. I've never seen anything like this before as part of any option package on these mustangs, so I'm guessing it's some aftermarket add on that helps cover up poor body work on that ridge around the scoops. Any ideas where these came from?</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I decided to use the front half of the coupe since the frame rails, dash and firewall are in good shape. Without a solid frame to start from I decided a frame jig was absolutely necessary. So I went to the local scrap yard and found a bunch of 1x4 steel tubes for about $50. I decided that I would make the jig from the dimensions in the back of the 1967 Mustang Shop Manual to make sure it all goes together correctly. After welding this together I tested it out on my coupe and it fit with very little grunting.</div>

I had to "shim" the jig up to fit under the car, but later took the car off the jack stands and everything stayed flat and level. Looking down the main rails of the jig showed that they remained straight which means that the weight is spread out fairly evenly.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
With the coupe on the jig I've decided to cut the front end off and remove the rear end. Then I'll roll the front end over to the back end of the convertible and put that on the jig as well. In the mean time, I realized that the whole back end of the coupe was going to be so awkward and heavy I might as well cut it up into a few pieces. I started by taking the top off so I could get a preview of what the next few weeks would hopefully bring. With the door braces and the jig underneath I think it was pretty well fixed.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In my excitement to mount the coupe to the jig I didn't realize that I should have taken the rotisserie mounts off before I mounted the jig, so the rear mount will have to stay on until I cut the rear end off.</div>

Like most people I usually come to these blogs and quickly read through the text to get to the pictures.<br />
<br />
I had some great comments on the blog earlier this week by a fellow Mustang restoration enthusiast that I've been following for the last 10 months and it made me re-question the end result for my current plan (I've lost count how many times I've questioned it). <br />
The thing I worry the most about this project is putting years of work into it and loads of cash only to have it considered either a conversion car or something that is not a true GT convertible. Or that people will think I'm trying to trick them by passing it off as a genuine car. I thought about this the rest of the week and did some basic calculations and I think the best option that would hold true to the GT convertible is to rebuild the front end from aftermarket and donor car parts.<br />
<br />
I looked into what it would take to just install a new front 'clip' on the original GT convertible and the sheet metal options today are much better than what they were 10 years ago. I can actually replace the firewall, lower cowl and A-pillars that were almost completely rusted out when I started this project. These are the major pieces I couldn't get before. Those pieces plus the rusted out front frame rails are why I originally cut the front off of the first donor coupe to place on the convertible.<br />
<br />
I've also found a few illustrations online that lead me to believe that there are some decent dimension of the frame in the back of the Mustang repair manual, so I can make sure everything is square and true when I put it together.<br />
<br />
I know it sounds like I flip-flopped suddenly, but I've been on the fence about all of this for years. I just recently started pressing ahead trying to at least get some work done. I figured it might help me figure out the best method as well.....hopefully it has.<br />
<br />
Now that I've realized I need to replace more on the donor car than I thought, I'm not sure how much time I would be saving doing the conversion compared to restoring the convertible.<br />
<br />
I also picked up enough steel tubing today from the local recycling place to build my own jig for the front end rebuild on the convertible. I was amazed it only cost $80! I priced this same amount out at the local steel tubing manufacturer and it would have cost about $250. The extra parts I would like to get for the front end of the convertible that wouldn't be necessary for the coupe conversion are only about $800 (completely worth it). I think I could get that number down significantly if I cut pieces off the coupe and patched things together, but in my experience this is sometimes more work than its worth for large parts. The only pieces I'll probably use from the coupe are the front frame rails and shock towers since these are in good shape.<br />
<br />
So without further ado.....here are some pictures of the car that will be the focus of my attention for the next few years.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
I know this doesn't look like much, but this is the back end of my GT convertible. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The trunk floor, trunk floor drop offs, rear quarters, wheel wells and most of the rear frame</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
rails need to be replaced, but so does the donor car. The tail light panel and upper trunk frame is much better on this car than the donor car.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
if I could ever buy an aftermarket convertible windshield frame so I luckily kept that.</div>

This weeks progress also brought with it the removal of the remainder of the outer rocker panel. I also used the wire wheel on the front frame rail then sprayed it with some rust converter. <br />
I also got excited to test fit some of the parts that I have on hand just so it looks like I had more progress than I really did......it worked and got me itching to weld some of these parts into place, but that will probably be next week when I get the rear torque box and frame rail pieces.<br />
I also had to remove a ton of surface rust from the "new" front torque box and floor support since they have been sitting around for 13ish years.<br />
I just ordered the new parts I'll need to finish up the frame section on the left side of the car. Once I get them I'll be able to fit everything together before tacking it all in place.....then I can say I'm actually restoring a car rather than just demolishing it.<br />
<br />

I don't think it would have taken a rocket scientist to figure out that there was going to be more rust, but I found it on a spot of the rear frame rails that didn't look rusty.<br />
I was under the car cleaning the rear frame rails off with a wire wheel on my pneumatic tool when I uncovered a tiny pin hole. I tried the screwdriver method of inspection.....that's when you hit the area in question with an old screwdriver and see if it makes a hole. If it does, you have bad rust and now a hole in your metal, if it doesn't it's called a patina.<br />
I guess I'm ordering a full rear frame rail now as well.....or maybe just some of the pieces that are really bad.<br />

I've done it before without turning it off and everything worked out fine. I knew it was a bonehead thing to do, but I always thought it was saving time when I didn't have to wait for the cutoff wheel to stop. I guess all those times I saved a few second were just erased when I had to spend a couple hours getting stitched up. Plus, you can add a few lost days of working on the car since my finger didn't bend very well.<br />
<br />
The "lucky" part is that my new insurance for the job I started almost a month ago didn't kick in for 2 more days, so at least I got to pay for the whole bill instead of just the co-pay......<br />
<br />
Well since I've been posting pictures of me cutting up my car I figured I should show pictures of me cutting up my finger (or at least the aftermath).<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Not too bad looking when I straighten my finger.</div>

It was only 80% because at the end of the day I wanted to be able to see more progress than just a bunch of holes I drilled out, so I cut the outer rocker panel about an inch forward of the edge of the B-pillar.<br />
<br />

After getting all the suspension components off I decided to strengthen up the car using door braces before I start chopping up the floor and rocker panels. I wanted to make sure the frame stayed straight.<br />
I saw some really good blogs out there talking about making their own convertible door braces for this same purpose, so I decided to follow suit.<br />
I built them in place from 16 gauge 1" square stock.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
I started off with 1/8th" plate mounted at the A-pillar door hinge bracket mounts.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjamChA9G2TbBlsskiW-KzimlapxWtsbks7-LV3JXp1h7ICXiSEJzkKZSkc1dXgH3j4CieHsd93YvrXTxHBlsB3agc9Yp2GXBtxqCIbzrH4lgPtza6Afe5dDzDFrBI-Ddo1I1S-lCGMNPg/s1600/IMG_20130603_200040.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjamChA9G2TbBlsskiW-KzimlapxWtsbks7-LV3JXp1h7ICXiSEJzkKZSkc1dXgH3j4CieHsd93YvrXTxHBlsB3agc9Yp2GXBtxqCIbzrH4lgPtza6Afe5dDzDFrBI-Ddo1I1S-lCGMNPg/s1600/IMG_20130603_200040.jpg" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Next I tacked on the basic outside frame components.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Like everything else on this car, the door latch screws were fused to the threads holding them in. I even tried the impact drive on them with no luck. Since I was going to replace these B-pillars anyway I figured it wouldn't hurt to simply weld the frame right to them. Plus this provides more structural support with two attach points as opposed to a single one.</div>
<br />

Since I started this blog back in August I got a new job back in Northern Utah where I grew up so I moved both cars and the garage full of associated parts back to Utah where this whole project first started. At this time, the coupe was basically just a rolling chassis that also served as storage for a lot of the miscellaneous parts I had. Below is a picture I took on our trip from Houston, TX to Syracuse, UT....yes, this is going to be a big project.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzXbjMj-qS5IlFW_T8NK9VAuHF1bhBjAMsCBbxwUgSd9YcXZPhjVOAeWk4485T6z5EJu8yN8ewN4GQOlqJ63-O11uGafyjCovbZ0gB4JStWnAIoVmIdQ0giMRZVQL_4WW_DUwvZa_Gzgs/s1600/IMG_20120909_004123.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzXbjMj-qS5IlFW_T8NK9VAuHF1bhBjAMsCBbxwUgSd9YcXZPhjVOAeWk4485T6z5EJu8yN8ewN4GQOlqJ63-O11uGafyjCovbZ0gB4JStWnAIoVmIdQ0giMRZVQL_4WW_DUwvZa_Gzgs/s1600/IMG_20120909_004123.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In the past few months I've had a lot more time to work on this car so I'll quickly update this blog with what I've done to the coupe since it was a rolling chassis/storage unit.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
First I installed the front and rear parts of the rotisserie that bolt onto the front and rear frame rails. You can see the front rotisserie mounted to the front frame rail in the next picture. You can also see that I removed the front suspension in this picture as well.</div>
<br />

Every once in awhile my kids would come out to see why I was making so much noise, so I let them help me as long as they could stay interested.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
After the front end components were removed I focused on the rear end and leaf springs. Everything went as well as you can expect on a 43 year old car. I had to cut most of the bolts off with my angle grinder. However the front leaf spring bolts were a special treat. If you've ever had to remove old leaf springs from a mustang you'll know what I'm talking about. The first (blurry) picture below shows how the bolt that goes through the bushing of the leaf spring also goes through the rear frame rail. After more than 40 years of salt and water this bolt and the metal sleeve attached to the rubber bushing become 1 piece. Since the metal sleeve is wider than the hole in the frame and the bracket you can't simply cut off the bolt head and pound the bolt out the other side. This is what I was trying with this first picture.</div>
<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: left;">In the end I busted out the oxy-</span><span style="text-align: left;">acetylene</span><span style="text-align: left;"> torch and melted/burned the rubber bushing out so I could get to the bolt/sleeve and cut that out. The blackened picture below shows the aftermath after catching this foul rubber on fire.</span></div>

Soon after tearing into the new convertible that I had bought I found that the front frame and everything attached to it was completely rusted out. Nothing I could have replaced, forward of the dash, could have been welded to anything that also didn't need to be replaced. This was the demise of Master Plan #1. "simply replace all rusty parts with good aftermarket parts". (still looking for the old pictures that show the extent of the rust)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In my over excited youth, I decided to cut off the front of my convertible, from mid-rocker panel forward, and replace it with the front end of a 1967 coupe parts car that I bought for $150. I figured this was a good plan, however several years of school and family time left these cut up pieces sitting outside. They didn't rust much more than they already were, but by the time I got a house with a big enough garage to start working on the car again, I realized that the coupe front end was bent out of square. This started looking like as big of a project as replacing all the old rusty part on the original convertible, so I scrapped the old coupe front end. And here ends Master Plan #2, "chop two rusty cars in half to make one slightly less rusty car, THEN replace all the rusty parts with good ones". (I know I have pictures of this franken-stang somewhere, but again, I'm still looking for them. I'll post them once I track them down.)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Now to my current plan, Master Plan #3. I found another '67 coupe parts car with less rust than the one I cut in half and managed to pick it up for $100. Of course it has rust. A lot. But the frame is in good shape and from measurements it appears to be square. So now I know that it would at least drive down the road straight compared to Master Plan #2. I still also have rear end of the convertible along with the dash and convertible windshield frame and front cowl. This newest coupe will now provide the base frame and act as a jig for my convertible parts. I'm starting out by getting a solid frame under the whole thing before I start replacing the rust parts with new ones. I need to replace the old rusty LH front torque box and add one to the LH side. Then I'll replace the old outer rockers and add the inner rocker panels that stiffen up the convertible frame. At this time I'll also replace the rear torque boxes with the proper convertible ones. From there I'll start adding all the extra convertible stiffening pieces along the floor pans and behind the back seat. Once I have a solid stiff frame I'll chop the top off and put the convertible windshield frame on. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I know it's possible to replace the inner/outer rockers and the floor pans on a convertible without compromising the square of the frame, but I decided I might as well keep the roof on the coupe for a little added structural stability until I get the convertible frame finished. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I've taken a mental inventory list on the car and figured that it will be mostly new aftermarket sheet metal with a few key frame members that will belong to the coupe with an equal amount of parts from the original convertible. The good this is that the convertible sheet metal that bolts on and the convertible top is still in decent shape so most of the car should be from the original convertible GT that I bought over 13 years ago.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
I am starting this blog as a way to document my progress on the restoration of my 1967 Mustang GT Convertible. I have had this car for over 13 years and I am finally to a point where I am going to begin the restoration again. I say "again" because I had started tearing it down when I first bought it in 1999, but soon after that I got married and dedicated most of my time and money to going to school. After school my wife and I started having kids and the Mustang took a back seat to life.</div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I have a few distinct memories of this car so I thought I would write them down here on my blog as a way of preserving them.</div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The first of these memories comes from the day I picked up the car. In the summer of 1999 my father and I drove up to one of his Mustang friends house (he had a lot of them....in fact I'm pretty sure one of them went by the name of Mustang Larry. however I think this one belonged to his friend Porter) and bought a 1967 Mustang GT Convertible for $2,000. We put it on a front end car trailer that only pulled the front two wheels off the ground.</div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I remember that the trip went flawlessly and the car road very well on this trailer all the way into my parents driveway. My father had pulled the truck in a little to far and decided to back the truck and trailer up. As he was doing this the trailer started to kink and the trucks bumper looked like it was going to run into the front fender of the Mustang so I started yelling "whoa, whoa!!". I thought my father had heard but instead of stopping he just went back even father until I saw the bumper crunch into the Convertible I had just bought.</div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
After he felt the contact my father stopped the truck. Afterwards I asked if he had heard me and he said he thought I was yelling "Go, Go!!". In the end the damage wasn't really that bad, but it was a bit of a shock seeing any damage to a car I had just bought.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
These are the pictures from that day and a few days following it. I was so excited to jump in and find out what I had gotten that I started taking sheet metal off the next day.</div>
